Malaysia emerged as the second happiest country in Southeast Asia behind Singapore, in the recently published World Happiness Report.

Succeeding in achieving a score of 6,012 points, Malaysia is ranked 55th globally. While Singapore, which won 6,587 points, is ranked 25th in the world.

Third in Southeast Asia (60 globally) is Thailand, which earned 5,843 points. The list is followed by Vietnam (65), Philippines (76), Indonesia (84), Laos (89), Cambodia (115) and Myanmar (117).

The report lists 137 countries for the 2023 edition. Brunei and Timor Leste are not included in this edition.

Finland has been named the happiest country for 2023

As for the top 20, most of them are dominated by countries from the European continent. The first place in the report was filled by Finland, which earned 7,804 points.

It was followed by Denmark and Iceland with 7,586 and 7,530 points respectively. The chart then followed Israel, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Luxemborg and New Zealand for the top 10 happiest countries in the world.

The report looks at six factors in evaluating the level of happiness of the population in a country. Based on the World Happiness Report website, the six factors are per capita income, social support and healthy life expectancy.

While the other three factors are freedom to make choices, generosity and also the perception of corruption.

The last time the World Happiness Report was released was in 2013, which is 10 years ago.


Study Reveals Petaling Jaya, Manjung And Kluang Among The Happiest Cities In Malaysia

In Malaysia, a study similar to the World Happiness Report was also conducted for cities and regions in Malaysia.

The Malaysia Happiness Index 2022 study was released in conjunction with the World Happiness Day on March 20 which is celebrated every year.

In the study, the cities of Petaling Jaya, Manjung, and Kluang have been recognized as among the 10 Happiest Cities 2022 in Malaysia.

Also on the list, include the cities of Gua Musang, Klang, Kulai, Krai, Kuantan, Rompin and Alor Gajah. All of these cities have been selected as the happiest cities through the 2022 Malaysia Happiness Index Study.

Citing Astro Awani, this study was carried out by the Town and Country Planning Department.

In this study, the general measure of the happiness index on the level of well-being of the population covers aspects of health, well-being, mental and physical.

Based on the study, environmental hygiene care, solid waste management and effective and regular garbage collection are the main factors that contribute to the level of happiness.

It is also closely related to the level and quality of services provided by the Local Authority (PBT).
